What we build on Shopify

Custom themes

Coded for your brand on top of Shopify’s bare starter theme. Nothing in it comes from a template, and nothing is in it that you don’t use.

Store setup

Products and variants, collections, payments, shipping rates, Utah sales tax and your domain, all set up and ready to sell on day one.

Redesigns of older stores

Many stores still run on retired themes, from before Shopify let you move sections around a page yourself. We rebuild the theme so you can.

Moves to Shopify

Your products, variants, photos and pages come over from Wix, Squarespace, WooCommerce, Etsy or BigCommerce. Every old address points to its new one, so links and search results keep working.

Shopify on the website you already have

Shopify’s buy buttons and collections sell right on your current site’s pages, and Shopify runs the checkout.

The features stores ask for

Subscriptions, loyalty points, influencer codes, product reviews, welcome offers and shipping rules, wired in through Shopify’s apps or built into the theme.

Storefronts in our own code

When a store needs something no theme can do, we build the storefront ourselves and keep Shopify behind it for products, checkout and orders. When Shopify won’t sell your products at all, we build the whole store, like the wholesale backend on our custom software page.

SOVRAN Supplements

Custom Shopify theme, North Salt Lake

A new Utah supplement brand, with about 15 products, wanted a store that didn’t look like a template. We designed it, then coded it as a Shopify theme from a blank start.

  • Every product page shows the full supplement facts, taken from the bottle’s label and stored in Shopify, so the team edits them in the admin without us.
  • A grand-opening countdown changes the homepage by itself at the launch moment.
  • A creator’s link applies their discount code and tags the order with their name, so commissions come straight from Shopify’s reports.
  • The brand’s retail stores are listed on the contact page with directions.
  • Checkout carries the brand’s logo and colors, set up in Shopify’s checkout editor.

The store opens at sovransupps.com on November 3.

Four Chairs Furniture + Design

Website with Shopify built in, Lindon

Four Chairs has a design studio and a separate Shopify store at shop.4-chairs.com. We rebuilt their website so the two work as one: collections sell on the website’s own pages through Shopify’s buy buttons, and checkout runs through Shopify.

Why a Utah studio

We meet in person, anywhere in Utah.

We’re based in Pleasant Grove and come to you, from Logan to St. George.

Same time zone.

Questions get answered during your workday, not overnight.

Utah sales tax, set up.

We set up Utah sales tax collection and shipping rules in Shopify as part of the build.

Your store stays yours.

It’s on your Shopify account, and the theme code is yours once the build is paid.

Should you buy a theme or get a custom one?

Start with a theme from Shopify’s theme store if it fits. It’s ready today and costs far less than a build. We’ll tell you on the first call which side you’re on.

A bought theme is the right call when

  • You’re launching to test demand, and the budget belongs in inventory
  • Your catalog and brand look like most stores in your category
  • The layouts the theme comes with already fit your products

A custom theme pays off when

  • Your brand is what you’re selling, and a template makes you look like everyone else
  • Your products need information a theme has no place for, like supplement facts or sizes by room
  • You’re paying for apps to patch what the theme can’t do
  • Your theme is old enough that you can’t move sections around anymore

What does a custom Shopify store cost?

Shopify stores start at $3,500. Scope sets the price: how many page designs, how many products and variants we load, whether products move from another platform, and which features go in. You get a fixed quote after a free call.

A typical Shopify store takes 4 to 6 weeks to build.

Your quote lists what’s included, in writing.

Shopify’s own costs are separate. You pay the monthly plan and card processing directly to Shopify, on your account.

After launch

An online store changes far more than an informational website. New products, sales, seasonal photos, shipping changes and app updates come every month. Our care plan covers that upkeep and your revisions, so the store keeps up without you having to learn the theme editor.

What Shopify controls

  • Checkout is Shopify’s. On standard plans we can brand it with your logo, colors and fonts, but not redesign it. A fully custom checkout needs Shopify Plus.
  • Hosting is Shopify’s. Shopify keeps the store online, and your monthly plan pays for it.

For web studios that don’t build on Shopify

We already get Shopify referrals from a web studio that doesn’t build on Shopify. If one of your clients needs a store and Shopify isn’t your platform, send them our way.

Can I update the store myself?

Yes. Products, prices, photos, collections and discounts are all edited in Shopify’s admin. You can rearrange the sections on your pages in Shopify’s theme editor without calling us.

Do I need Shopify at all?

Not always. If you sell a few items for local pickup only, a custom site with card checkout can cost less over time, with no platform fee. If Shopify’s payment rules don’t allow your products, we build the whole store ourselves. We’ll tell you which fits on the first call.

Will moving to Shopify hurt my Google rankings?

We point every old page address to its new one, so search engines carry your old pages’ standing over to the new store. Rankings can still move for a few weeks after any site move.

What should I ask before hiring a Shopify developer?

Ask to see stores they’ve built and can name, who actually does the work, what the price includes in writing, what Shopify charges you on top, and who owns the theme code at the end. Our answers are all on this page.

How long does a Shopify build take?

A typical store takes 4 to 6 weeks. A large catalog, a move from another platform or custom features can add time.

We have a retail shop in Utah. Can the store work with it?

Yes. Your locations can go on the site with directions. Shopify can also take in-store sales on its point-of-sale app and offer local pickup if you want it.

Do you build Shopify stores in Salt Lake City?

Yes. We work with Salt Lake businesses the same way we work with Utah County ones, in person when you want it.

Who does the work?

The same small team you talk to on the first call designs and builds your store. We don’t hand it off to an outside shop.
